Hi,

I would love to hear back from parents about their ideas and experiences in de-stressing themselves from time to time.

I feel overwhelmed in this journey from time to time. There are fears, disappointments from school systems. I worry about his future and also about if people would accept him as he is. It has been a year since I know about my son's autism but still I start crying when it comes to sharing the news with someone.

I love my son and he is so affectionate, caring and loving child. But as a mother why is it so painful to see him go thro his crying tantrums and I cannot see him suffer.

Sometimes I get so tired that I feel like crying, but I cannot cry.

After couple of sleepless nights, I thought of gaining some insight from other parents who are in the same boat. So here I am asking some help from other parents. What do u do to survive?

-Vparent

My son has Down syndrome with autistic tendencies that seem to get stronger as he ages and he is now 24 years old. I pulled him out of the day center in June so he is with me 24 hours a day. He functions at the 40 month level. I also went through all the hassles with the schools and he was mostly homeschooled. My faith in God and in believing that my son has a purpose for being on earth gets me through the worst of it. I get through it day by day with some days very hard. On the hard days, I try to do something I enjoy even though that is limited with my son ever present. Sometimes I just feel so denied my life because of our son that even the smallest treat is just so wonderful. Yeah, this cannot go on and we are looking desperately for answers. It is also more likely than not that our son suffers from mental illness. So, I guess though I do play the "glad game", I am glad that the situation is not worse. I know many have problems bigger than myself. Deep breath! One day at a time and be as generous as you can be with yourself. Even if you can just go for a walk, a short one, and get some fresh air............

I know your pain so well. So far what works for me is that I have a stash of comedy movies and shows that I watch. I find that even 30 minutes of laughing is therapeutic. The other thing I do is to hit the gym every morning (I take Sunday's off) I do the treadmill for 30 minutes and weights for 30 minutes. In the summer, I walk and do lots of outdoor stairs. Point is, get physical for at least 30 minutes a day for at least 5 days a week. I don't like the gym in the summer, so I find ways to do athletic things outside when it's warmer. I love sunshine, so just being outside is a good start.

I agree, physical activity is great for de-stressing! Also, there are a lot of yahoo groups you can join. It helps so much to hear about other's stories who are going through the same things, and to maybe help someone else with your own experience. Writing back and forth is so therapeutic...we all need someone to talk to! It is painful, yes, but you also have to see the glass as half full. Best of luck to you!
