Why not make chess a 'sport', too?
do chess players do that ? .. i dont know iv`e never watched it .. if chess is a sport then so is monopoly and checkers ..i dont mind things being called a sport as much as i mind car racers or golfers being called athletes ..

I can't think of much out there that would be more boring to watch on TV than chess. To me, its like golf. I enjoy playing but find it rather boring to watch on TV. I don't see any amount of marketing or story telling that could make it exciting. Chess is just too methodical to make for good TV. Sorry.

I don't think poker should be called a sport. It is nothing of a sport. It's a game, plain and simple. Same wth darts, Scrabble, spelling bees, etc. Just because it is on a "sports channel" doesn't make it a sport. I think some people have been brainwashed into thinking poker is a sport because it appears on ESPN or Fox Sports.

I guess that depends on your definition of athlete. To me, it involves people participating in a competition that requires strength, speed, physical coordination or endurance (or combination of them). In that sense, both golf and auto racing fits.

Poker is not a sport. One does not even have to move much to play it. Chess is in the same category. If chess is a sport, then let's add Scrabble, Monopoly and other board games....

I shoot pool in a league. Is that a sport? Not to me. It is like darts. Requires some hand/eye coordination, but not really a sport. More like an activity...

As someone else alluded, watching a chess match on TV would be the ultimate in boring. Why would I sit and watch someone resting his/her chin on his/her hand contemplating their next move? It moves as slow as a snail, and sport or activity, it's about as far from TV friendly as I could think of.
