...wear sunglasses (special type that's wrapped around and not lose) when playing tennis. Staying in the sun is very damaging to the eyes. This is especially true for the ones with light color eyes. It's like being in the sun all the time when you're light skinned and with no sunscreen.

Many good tennis players have Latin blood and not as susceptible to the suns damaging effects as pasty Americans.

ALL the players currently still playing at the French Open have light color eyes (Djokovic, Murray, and Wawrinka).

Tennis is kind of cranky about some things, they may not be allowed to wear sunglasses.

It's a work place hazard. Not wearing sun glasses when playing tennis in the sun on an almost daily basis is almost like not wearing condoms while doing porn. You got to have protection.

You can almost count the top female players on your fingers who are not some light eyed Europeans.

Funny. Never noticed it before, but if there's an unwritten rule about maintaining a certain "look", that's rather uppity. If there is a written rule, then it's still rather uppity, unless there's some kind of safety issue!

It took years before players were allowed to wear anything other than all white. That changed in the McEnroe/Connors/Evert era.

Sam Stosur wears sunglasses in nearly every match. Kirsten Flipkens & Janko Tipsarevic use them a lot as well. I can remember Agassi wearing shades in matches sometimes.

Most players find them distracting. Especially when serving, the frames get in the way of a clean sight of the ball. Therefore most players use a cap or visor.
