Hogan by far. Rock is a definite second, because he's established himself in the movies. I think there would be a fairly large group of people who are not aware or barely aware that Rock was ever involved with wrestling---it is not really what he's known for anymore.

I think those are probably the only two that people who don't watch wrestling would recognize. I agree that if Andre were still around he would be probably be right up there. I am a big fan of some of the others listed [esp. Flair] but they're not going to be recognized by a lot of people unless they're in their "home" region.

I wish it were Ernie Ladd! The Ladd stuff that is on YouTube is priceless...

Its Hulkamania by a landslide. I would think second, who is not on the list for some weird reason, is The Macho Man Randy Savage.

IMO, of ALL TIME wrestlers (at least that I know about) its:

1. Hulk Hogan
2. Randy Macho Man Savage
3. Andre The Giant

That is my top three right there. Its a toss up on who 4-10 are.

Do believe the question should be "The most famous showman wrestler" or "The best legit wrestler of past decades"

My pick for an legit wrestler would be Georgous George from the 1950's.

Just watch the foot movements when a lift is needed. Dead weight is hard to lift at times.

I forgot about Savage, he would be in the top group too. I would say the Rock would be above him though just because of his movie work. But like I said, that almost doesn't count because he is more of a movie star who used to wrestle.

I hear that Flair is still very popular and has a lot of media visibility in the Charlotte area, he would probably be more or less tied with Hogan there.

I think the only American wrestler that most people would recognize is Rulon Gardner in the year or two after he won the Olympic gold medal in 2000, and possibly only if they were prompted with the name.

Of the professional fakers listed in the survey, a good percentage of Americans would probably recognize Hulk Hogan and The Rock, although from his movie career.

Of the rest listed, a few names would be recognized (Steve Austin, maybe nobody else), and as for the rest only a tiny sliver of the American public would even recognize their names.

And everyone would know one thing about it: it's all fake.

Hogan. He is famous. The rest are not.

I do not consider wrestling (Hogan style) to be a sport. It is more like athletic theatre.

And to be fair, it has not been portrayed as anything but that for the last couple of decades. I don't think it has been promoted as a legitimate sport since the 1980s.

In the past you had quite a few pro wrestlers who had strong Olympic/college wrestling backgrounds and could really hurt someone if they wanted to, but I think these days most of those guys go into MMA.
