Maybe you should re-read my post. I said at the extreme end, you're an hour from downtown at Dardenne Prairie in rush hour. I did that to illustrate that saying St. Charles is about an hour from downtown is ridiculous. It isn't and never has been. I live here and commute here. On average, the times I quoted are accurate. I saw nothing in the OP stating the poster would be driving in peak rush hour traffic at all times. In fact, the poster says the meetings will run LATE.

St. Charles, Kirkwood, Webster, Maplewood could all match that description. They're all suburban, but with nice downtowns/main streets to explore. All are within 30 minutes of downtown. Barring accidents, traffic is usually light in StL relative to larger cities, even during rush hour.

I commute from O'Fallon, MO to Maplewood, 27 miles. It takes 40 minutes during rush hour. 30 minutes any other time. It's an easy drive.

Clayton is technically a suburb, but feels much more urban. University City is similar. Brentwood isn't really walkable.

*Correction: I removed east side areas from my previous post.*

You would have been perfectly fine in Collinsville.
