My husband bought a 2016 Subaru WRX two years ago. We need to get it registered here in the state of TX and they require an emissions test.
We took it to an "inspection only" place near our home last weekend, where it promptly failed the emissions inspection. The inspection "FAIL" report basically says that they could not detect the Catalyst or O2 sensors.
We thought this just could be because it may have been a cold engine, etc. So we took it and it's been driven approx. 200 miles this week in varying conditions to attempt to have a couple of drive cycles.
We took it to a Subaru dealership this morning after driving it a fair bit - approx 40 miles and showed them the failed emissions inspection from last weekend. We had an appointment and these same sensors wouldn't detect. They stated it was because we do not have enough miles on the car and cited nothing was wrong and suggested we put another 200 miles on it and bring it back. It currently has 7200 miles. My husband has only driven 1500 miles on it since the last oil change in the summer, so they refused to do his 24 month service stating it wasn't worth it.
We put another 150 miles on it driving it around for over three hours today and brought it back to the dealership this afternoon. IT failed the inspection for a third time and they again, refused to look into the vehicle further - saying we needed to drive it more and bring it back.
I'm not sure what to do. We bought this car completely BRAND NEW. It is the Limited version, but it is the CVT transmission. We haven't modded it at all. 100% stock.
Is the failed inspection at the dealer due to the same reasons? Are they using the on-board readings or an actual tail pipe reading? The only possible reason I can think of for the "not enough miles" is the on board computer is being reset and as a result, it needs to go through the full cycle. However, this is a covered warranty item so demand they fix it or start complaining directly to Subaru USA.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening?
The vehicke has a mandatory federal emissions coverage for I believe 7 years 70k miles may be 8 years 80k miles. Go to the dealer and tell them it won’t pass smog test. UNLESS you screwed with the emissions components it’s not your problem.
Usually new cars are not required to smog for 5 years
Sounds like you need to find a more professional dealership. Or move somewhere that doesn't have emissions testing. We don't do that nonsense in Alaska.
EVAP is usually the trickiest monitor to set; catalyst and O2 really shouldn't take long. Did someone mess with the battery recently? I've heard of a weak/failing battery causing emissions monitors to not set. Perhaps you can get the battery tested just to make sure it is in good shape.

We used to. At least in Anchorage. But even then you didn't have to do it for a new car until it was 5 or 6 years old. At one year old, I believe there are federal laws concerning emissions and it should be fixed by the dealer under warranty.
It's under warranty. Let the dealership do a repair if necessary and let them inspect it. Rent a car and go home until it's ready.
