Syracuse and Albany have the best job markets in Upstate NY right now.

For the past couple years the Syracuse Metropolitan Area has grown about 2,500 jobs each year. Manufacturing jobs, and "Information" jobs are decreasing, but all the other sectors are growing. Entry level professional jobs are hard to come by, but if you have experience, you can usually find a job. The fastest growing jobs are in the medical field. Unemployment rate is around 4 percent.

As I see it, the real problem with most Upstate cities including Syracuse is that young people right out of college have a hard time finding a good job. But if you are coming from another city and have "experience" then it's much easier to find a good job. There was a newspaper article in the Syracuse Post Standard last week that said this:

"Roger Evans, an economist and labor analyst with the state Department of Labor, said the service sector's growth, combined with the area's slow population growth, soon could produce the kind of labor shortages the area saw in 2000. And that could mean slower job growth next year than what the area has seen this year, he said"

I really doubt labor shortages will happen here. There's always companies closing down and the population growth has been slow due to the lack of jobs. If there are jobs, then the young people won't need to move away. During the 90s many people from Syracuse had to move to Albany or Rochester to find a job. If Syracuse has more job growth, I'm sure you'll see that reverse the other way.
