I have experience with gardening in my area and grew many plants and trees over the years in the suburbs of Syracuse, NY. In my opinion, based on experience here are the easiest low maintenance Perennials, Shrubs and Trees to grow in this area for easy food. Not counting greens or herbs.
Mulberry Trees
Asian Pear Trees
Grape Vines
Asian Chestnut Trees
Goumi Shrub
Asparagus
Cherry Trees
Kousa Dogwood
Raspberry
Blackberry
Rhubarb
Jerusalem Artichoke
Currents
Chinese Yam
You could grow many more like Apple Trees, Plum Trees and Quince Trees but they would take more work to grow and get them to fruit successfully each year long term. I found them more fussy in giving them a good location and work to keep them happy. My Quince Tree died out one year once it began to be more shaded out. My Apricot Tree stopped producing after a few years when it got less sun. My Plum Tree got a disease. My Apple Tree produces deformed fruit in a mostly shady spot. BTW, I only garden organically.
