So my g/f and I are planning on taking a trip to the weeki wachee/withlacoochiee forest area and I'm wondering should I be worried being that were a gay couple and my g/f is black. The attached photo of the confederate flag along the weeki wachee river makes me a little nervous.

Landlocked pirates? Looks suspicious to me.

No idea really. Looks nice for a visit. Probably not where I'd personally pick to live though those backyards do look excellent.

Googling I found no reports of gay bashing there.

Here's city-data stats on Brooksville:

Lesbian couples: 0.2% of all households
Gay men: 0.2% of all households

As opposed to Tampa's stats
  • Lesbian couples: 0.4% of all households
  • Gay men: 0.6% of all households
Races in Brooksville:

  • White Non-Hispanic (73.2%)
  • Black (21.3%)
Races in Tampa:

  • White Non-Hispanic (51.0%)
  • Black (26.1%)
also I found this: Find a Meetup Group Near You! - Rainbow Family Meetups - Brooksville

Ooops. Hold the presses.

Ok, so not real gay friendly, at least not whoever is publishing this website...

Grain of salt: I think this tells me less about Brooksville than it does about the internet.

Confederate Flag does not equal racism.

I have not heard from either gay people I know nor mixed race couples I know here in Hernando about being harassed in any way.

Most that live down along the Weeki Wachee are laid back and I know of at least a few gay couples that live on the river.

I dont think you will have a problem in Hernando County.

Lots of confederate flags around in FL.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it. Confederate flags are all over the place here (including the world's largest at the I-4/75 interchange in Tampa), but they seem to be used in a cultural sense rather than a racial sense.

Brooksville is by no means a gay mecca, but I doubt you'll experience any problems. Weeki Wachee should definitely be alright.

Maybe they're fans of the Dukes of Hazzard! Before I learned of the Civil War, I'd come to associate that flag Beau and Luke Duke, and the hayseed svelteness of Smokey and the Bandit..

You have nothing to worry about. Rebel flags are common in the south. No big deal. It's not a racist thing.

You might have to deal with pirates though...see that jolly roger?

The rebel flag has lost any context to racism for most whities and is more to do with some one thinking he's a bad ass rebel, the flag is probably more known for the Dukes of Hazzard connection than any connotation to racism.
Its also a darn good looking flag.
You wont have any trouble in Hernando county.
