I'm considering a move to St. Pete myself and have been looking at several houses. Anyone have any opinions on the area north of 38th? north of 54?

Do things get better the farther north you go?

Also east of 275.

And finally .. where exactly is the center of St. Pete? I was expecting something where the streets go into a radial pattern but I can't see anything from google maps. :P

Some people would say things get better the further north you go. That's somewhat true (I find myself defending southside a lot). The neighborhoods north of 38th and east of 275 are very nice. My sister lived in two different neighborhoods just off of 62nd ave. near 9th St. You do have to make sure you don't get into a flood zone, though. Flash flooding can be a problem in a lot of areas with poor drainage systems.

The street layout of St. Pete is actually quite user-friendly. We have Central Ave. running east/west down the center of St. Pete. The street numbers then get larger the farther north or south you go from there. 34th Street (which turns into Hwy. 19 at 62nd Ave.) is one of the most central streets. So, if you go to 34th St. and Central Ave. you will be roughly in the center of St. Pete.

I live in NE St. Pete, which is anything north of Central Ave. and east of 1st St. N. It's very nice. Also prone to flooding in low lying areas, though. As someone else has said, once you get past 1st Street, it get's more quiet and peaceful. There isn't a lot of traffic, and only small businesses.

Hope this helps

I'm moving to that area to, off Gandy in the Gateway area. It seems pretty nice, more quiet and laid back but very close to all the major roads and bridges.

Thanks ... some of the houses we've browsed (online only) have had mandatory flood insurance tied to the mortgages. I was wondering how much that actually was and if it would be a good idea to get it even if it wasn't required.

Does anyone know of a good flood map? I'll be googling all week for that one.
