Hyde Park used to be a pretty big deal, though. Then they kicked out the AMC movie theater, intending to put condos in there. I'm not sure why the retail portion dried up, but it was likely due to high rents and/or condo redevelopment.

I went there yesterday around 3pm'ish and it was still deserted.....
I really can't pin point it "why"...but that area is dead...it "looks" nice, but where are the people?

Loved the sign in one's yard: "per city ordinance, 5 minute parking only"! LOL I guess if we're forced into "garage parking only", therefore more $$$, could be reason why ppl rather not be there? LOL

I too, like St Pete's downtown better.

I saw the old Hyde Park village for the first time recently and was really impressed with it, but than I noticed how deserted it was, maybe because I was there at 3:30 on saturday. I really like the South Tampa area and think it has alot of potential. I think if they improved the sidewalks and brought in amenities to draw in more than just the college age hard partying types, Hyde Park could be a really great area comparable to DT St. Pete. This is just an outsiders opinion.

Parking in Hyde Park Village garages are free, and have been for 20 years. I love Sunday Fundays in the Village, Wine Exchange, Timpano's, new French Bakery/Cafe, new Irish Restaurant/Pub, and Cinebistro...plus they have monthly festivals on a Wednesday or Friday evening from 6-9 with live music(this Friday is a Wine and Restaurant tasting to benefit a charity in the Village).

Downtown Tampa is def not Downtown St. Pete, but last weekend it was packed downtown, had some afternoon drinks at the Sail Pavillion on the Riverwalk, then over to Jackson's and Cafe Dufrain to meet with some friends, then walked over to the Columbia Cafe on the Riverwalk for dinner, then over to Curtis Hixon Park where there was the 'Lights on Tampa' bi-annual event with lots of people aroound, a quick drink at the Hubb, then over to the Forum where the Lighting Hockey game was getting out to catch the free Tonic concert on the courtyard, then we hopped on the streetcar to Ybor to grab some awesome Pizza, and see some great live bands at Crowbar, and then Czar, and grabbing a Taxi back home in South Tampa...what a FUN Saturday afternoon/night in downtown Tampa!!

Nope, believe it or not, this isn't a conspiracy for the city to make money. Any homeowner within the City of Tampa can put up one of those five-minute parking signs and it becomes enforceable. You'll see this in neighborhoods with very narrow streets, but especially in the neighborhoods around Plant High School, since so many students have to park off-campus.
