Regardless, 29.9% of your state being native born citizens is terrible. No ways around that.

Hm... on second review, I think that the first column says that out of the current population, 70.1% were born in another state and 29.9% were born in Florida. The second column says that out of Florida-born people, 66.0% still live here and 34.0% have left. That makes more sense to me.

Well, this is a thread about growth in the Tampa Bay area, and with growth comes new population and new population is coming from out of state, therefor, the debate about native vs. transplant is valid.

I think we can all agree that 70% of the State of Florida has population born in another state or country and that it's not a good thing?

While retirees move down and buy houses, condos, ect...and spend thier money in our local economies.....that is a positive

At the same time we are increasing the amount of people who will vote "no" on any and all measures that include even the smallest tax increase for schools, roads, public transit, ect...

Also...most (if not all) retirees are not here to "start a business"........

Florida's economy has always relied on retirees moving here as a major economic contributer.....

But it is exactly those type of things that will continue to keep Florida from diversifying itself enough to not repeat the problems of the past.....i.e...

"eggs all in 1 basket".....housing, tourism, retirees, ect....it's like we're starting the same cycle (from the 70's 80's and 90's) all over again

I'm not so sure about that. Having lived in an area where 99.9% of the population growth was from within the state, I have found having people come in from out of the area to be far superior. Otherwise you end up with stagnated thinking and a lack of cultural influences. For instance, having people from all over the world here, we end up with all kinds of authentic cultural cuisine. Where I came from all you have is McDonalds and pizza joints. Everyone dressed the same, acted the same and did the exact same thing. No culture, almost no entertainment options, etc. BORING!

Being here in the Tampa Bay area, it is obviously far from boring, has all kinds of cultural opportunities and many different ways of thinking....IMO. This is far far better, IMO.

I think where you missed is that 66% of those who live here "florida-born people" that I highlighted is from Florida-born people in the whole USA, not the 29.9% that live now here.

Let's take an example..

In 2006, Florida had 18mill people,

of this 29.9% are born here, which is 5,382,000. This number happens to be 66% of all Florida-born people that are in USA. Therefore, all Florida-born people in the US in 2006 were 8.155mil (100/66 * 5.382).

Therefore, the 66% that still stay here are 66% of 8.155mil (0.66*8.155mil = 5.382mil) and the 34% that left the state are 34% of 8.155mil (= 2.773mil).

Totally agree - it's a FANTASTIC thing, IMO. For instance, Tampa was a melting pot right from the beginning, with immigrants coming from Spain, Cuba, Italy, Germany and Africa. All these things make the city more unique and vibrant. I love transplants coming from all over, including other countries. Makes for great variety.
