Just found and read it - meh, that's just his opinion - I have found that in almost EVERY city, people are opposed to something new and different (just like the new Pier for St. Pete). Here in Sarasota years ago people made a big deal about the new library (looks like stonehenge, LOL) and tried to stop the beautiful new Ringling Bridge calling it "Bridge too High." But in the end, people get over it and come to like and appreciate the new structures, people will change when they see how the new development helps to revitalize that district. Just because some myopic editorialist of journalist expresses their opinion doesn't mean it's EVERYONE'S opinion.

problem is that living here over 25 yrs ago- I see that mentality has thwarted TampaBay. I just visited S Beach and they are still building and all very excited about the changes. I see changes every year I go on my BD.

Ohh I completely agree...between 2003 and 2006 there were 18 brand new buildings built downtown Miami alone. That's 3(three) years.

Unfortunately we are plagued by retired republicans and misguided democrats who somehow got elected and now are slowly destroying Tampa. Look how long its been since they started that Encore project, and it looks ugly, bunch or boxes without any character! You wouldn't know you're in Florida. Ugly. Prime location and they couldn't do anything architecturally interesting like they do in Miami! OMG If Miami had that space they would have made it awesome! there is an aversion to progress here that is plaguing Tampa, and that is weird because even in Sarasota they are building cooler things than they do here. If you didn't know better, you'd think those in charge really hate Tampa.

My theory is, the west coast attracts mostly Midwesterners, that are used to rural areas and small towns. They're not accustom to high density and large developments and are unjustly fearful of large developments. THey see them as a threat to the small town lifestyle they grew up in.

South east Fl, is all people from the northeast and Latin America, where large dense cities are common place, so new large developments are seen as a good thing, helping the community to grow and prosper.
Personally, I think Tampa needs to be some leadership that can push the citizens of this city to realize that we are quickly being left behind.
As soon as Orlando completes their Sun Rail, Orlando will take off, leaving Tampa to stagnate.

Well. I blog and comment and maybe someone in office hears it and other people join the bandwagon. I think unitl we shift the "retirerment community" to a working high tech one,,, we are never going to rise. The mayor is trying but, I posted each town has its own negative folks who protest any change. But drugs, crime, unemployment and pedofiles are eating them alive.
