Bought a house about 2 months ago and we have the same problem in our backyard as we did in our rental...the entire backyard is nothing but basketgrass. I don't mind it during the summer when it is green and appears to be grass from a distant, but it totally dies during the fall/winter and leaves a sandy mess- and also very unattractive.

How can I get rid of this weed and what are my options for an efficient lawn? I don't need a fancy subdivision lawn or that grass where you sink down when walking...just a nice thick ACTUAL grass that is low maintenance and thrives in Florida. Our front yard doesn't have this and is a mixture of some lawn grass mixed with weeds. Difference I suppose is our front is open to direct sunlight while our backyard gets a lot of shade from tree cover.

I know sod is more expensive and requires a lot of maintenance...so I'd prefer something that works from seed.

Problem is, I tried to clear a space at our rental house yard a year back and throw out seed...not a single thing grew.

Help? Any other good threads on this topic you can direct me to? Much appreciated!
