Hello all. I am moving my family to Tampa at the end of July. I will be working in the Lake Egypt neighborhood. How is this area for living? It is hard to find much information on it. I've found info on Carrollwood, which is very close, and read good things. I've read not so great things about Town and Country, which is also close. I want to maximize my family time, so living close to work would be excellent. My job pays me an additional $1700 for housing, so I'm looking for a nice neighborhood in the 1300-1700 range. Also, my wife likes palm trees

I'd also like to add that I'd be willing to drive 30 minutes to work. I don't want to sacrifice quality living for a shorter commute to work. My new wife is taking a big leap of faith by moving across the country with me, and I want her to love every minute of it. I don't need to live right in Lake Egypt is what I'm saying. Basically, I want to live in a safe suburb.

Thanks for your help. I'm from Minnesota and she is from Tennessee, so this is a whole new ball game for the both of us. We are very excited and ready to hit the beaches!

If schools are a concern I would recommend East Lake/Palm Harbor which is well within your 30 minute work commute timeframe and is a safe, family-friendly area with A-rated public schools and plenty of nearby conveniences. It's also convenient to the beach, just 20 minutes to the beach at Honeymoon Island in Dunedin or 30 minutes to Clearwater Beach.

Schools certainly are, as my daughter will be starting kindergarten in the next year or so. 30 minutes is not too bad of a drive, and my wife will love being near the beach. I will look up both East Lake and Palm Harbor. Your insight is much appreciated. One of the guys working at the location I'll be at says a lot of the coworkers live in Brandon, but I'm reading that it's a horrible commute as far as traffic goes. My work hours will be 10am - 6pm.

Brandon would be a nightmare commute and not sure why they would have voluntarily chosen that. With 10am to 6pm work hours your drive to and from East lake/Palm Harbor will be a breeze.

Yep, it is since much of the work on US19 has been completed on the north end and of course if you're not going during weekday rush hour. It's 19 miles and more than half of the trip is at highway speed.

Do you know where Egypt Lake is?
To go west to Palm Harbor/East Lake you have to cut across the million people trying to get to or out of Carrolwood/Lutz/Northdale then Citrus Park/Westchase, that traffic doesnt die down until 7pm, depending on how you cut across you might have to deal with the flooding at Hillsborough during the summer.

Also check out The Missing Piece in S. Tampa. It is a consignment store, but everything there is very nice and much cheaper than buying new from a store.

This..

Going to east lake/palm harbor would be way more than 30minute. There is no way you can do it at that time. May be 50minutes to 1 hour, if you are lucky. I doubt if you can do 30 minute at mid-night let alone in daily traffic. When you come here, do the commute and see it for yourself.

Ok, so far, one person has made two suggestions and the other 5 posts that followed were people shutting down his suggestions. Do you guys have any ideas other than what he recommended? I do appreciate the input on the drive from east lake and palm harbor, but what do you think instead? How about carrollwood? Town and country?
