I can see that. A lot of bad drivers + a lot of J walkers = bad news.

If people stayed out of the roadway they wouldnt get hit by vehicles. Its not that the vehicles
are driving off the road onto the sidewalks to get them. These fools just walk out in traffic with the notion that everyone will see them and cars will stop on a dime to let them cross.

Cops need to be proactive in jaywalking. Its about time. Bikes without lights are being ridden by idiots who also feel they are in the right.

Well, actually, they do sometimes drive on the sidewalk. There was a couple killed on a Beach Dr.(I think) sidewalk in St Pete not too long ago. I remember reading about other people getting killed on sidewalks while I lived in Florida. But I agree that a lot of these accidents could be avoided if people would stay out of the road.

Another problem associated with the high rate of pedestrian deaths is the amount of people who leave the scene. It seems like the majority of these incidents are hit and runs. Are they drunk? I would think there has to be some form of illegal activity for someone to takeoff after they run over a pedestrian.

Drunk, drugged, uninsured.

Yes they do drive on the sidewalk as well. In addition to the one you mentioned you have the drunk dentist who killed the two college students walking on the sidewalk after getting off work. Took 3 yrs for him to go to trial and he got a 13yrs(big deal).

The reason you see so many hit and runs in FL is due to the many driving with no insurance and on suspended licenses. They may not even be at fault and pedestrian walked out into traffic, but the thing is the first thing they think of is they're driving when they're not legally supposed to be driving. So off they go.

But when you don't impound cars like other states do, this is what you end up with. It's amazing how when those who violate the law in states that impound manage to get things straightened out license/insurance wise when their car is taken away from them.

It's more cost effective to get their license up to date and insurance than pay huge impound fees.

In FL you get a ticket for no insurance when stopped, and eventually your DL is suspended. So what? You still have the car. The problem occurs when they hit someone or get hit, that is why they take off. In addition to the ones who are impaired.

Florida is NOT pedestrian friendly. You have to walk a looong block to get to a crosswalk, and most people are too lazy and think they can make it. Add to this the fact that most of them are impaired while they are jaywalking, and you are asking for a fatality.

Need to account for the weather, which makes walking more feasible here more of the year than most places. Also population age with older people less able to see cars, and cars being driven by those who can not see well and neither can react quickly.

But then- you don't even need to be walking to get hit here. There seems to be an extraordinary amount of cars crashing into houses and buildings here! Planes too!

There should be a mandate that when you reach a certain age take license away or take a driveing test every year. But the state of Florida just wants your money. Hell Stevie wonder can get a license here. When I switched my license from Illinois they just gave me a new license. When I got my switched my Michigan license to illionis I had to take a written test. But here no just give them your money and you are good to go.

The problem isn't just jay walkers. Honestly, I'm shocked Brandon isn't listed instead of Tampa. I used to have to walk to work. I followed all pedestrian laws and almost got hit daily. It became a game of *******. Are jay walkers a problem? Yes. Are drivers also a problem? Most definitely.
