Does Tampa Bay have the potential to become a major/global city? (Miami: to live in, manufacturing)

Global city? Not in my lifetime. I DO see it becoming a MUCH bigger city than it is now by the time I die. That said, the only real global cities in the U.S. are NYC and LA. Even Atlanta is considered a "beta world city." That speaks volumes about how difficult it is to become a city that well recognized.

That said, it's incredibly difficult to find lists of what is considered a world city, therefore, I may be missing some.

There is definitely a chance! The owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning Jeffrey Vinik is investing two BILLION (not a typo) on the downtown area for what he calls a "work, live play" project. Companies are moving here due to tax benefits and lower cost (plus they can pay employees less, make the same profits and those employees won't have to struggle financially). Will it ever be New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta or Chicago? No but there are things being put in place to progressively improve Tampa's economic scene on a larger level than where it's currently at.

Vinik, Sharp, and Buckhorn each have separate projects that will definitely help Tampa. The one I'm most curious about is Sharp's plan on the University area.

All those projects are basically stuff for rich people. And they haven't even talked about addressing the parking crisis in downtown Tampa.

When I think "rich," I typically think the University area or right on Nebraska Ave.

My understanding of the list of Alpha World Cities in the US (of varying levels of course)

New York City (Alpha ++)
Los Angeles (Alpha)
Chicago (Alpha)
Miami (Alpha -)
Atlanta (Alpha -)
Washington DC (Alpha -)
Boston (Alpha -)
San Francisco (Alpha -)

I believe that Tampa was rated as a Beta +, below Gamma - mid sized cities such as Cleveland and Minneapolis.

If it ever does happen, it will be because something happens to Miami with Global Warming or otherwise that causes it to not be Florida's financial capital. But if that were the case, Tampa would be in trouble also. Even now, Tampa is facing competition from the east, as Orlando's Real GDP is expected to surpass Tampa Bay's by the end of the decade which is astounding considering how recently it started existing. This isn't a knock on Tampa, but based on location/notoriety, Orlando probably has more Alpha possibility than Tampa, even though neither are likely to be on that level anytime soon due to population numbers/lack of major corporate employers. The fact that Philadelphia/Seattle/Houston/Dallas aren't considered alphas should give general awareness about difficult it is to become a Global
City in the truest sense.

Not that Tampa Bay really needs that distinction either though. It comes with headaches, as residents of most of those cities can attest.

Why would Tampa need to become a major, global city? I guess it's all about flexing muscle and showing off in today's world.

TB needs to strike a balance and emphasize on quality of life. All those major global cities are dirty and congested as hell. I recently read the Chinese are consolidating 4 major cities; that will create a super city of 45 mil people. Imagine living in such a city -???-.
