I'm not in the field of criminal justice, but I'm sure there are evidence based programs implemented by other area cities to prevent/intervene. Simply locking up juveniles won't do any good and will likely give you hardened adult criminals in the end.

So you are now saying you aren't really sure but put your faith that someone else has found a better way, but can't point to anything specific.

OK, I get it, you just want to be the person who takes counterpoint in the discussion.

What training do you think I have in criminal justice?

There are programs to identify high risk individuals (ie 126 arrests between 3 kids) that place these kids in special programs, schools, daily monitoring, supervision.

Because locking them up for life for petty crimes won't fly in this country unless they've committed a heinous crime.

How long do you plan on incarceration a petty criminal? Life?

BTW, the article also ranks US 85 out of 149 countries, between Brazil and Angola. So there's obviously room for improvement and lessons that can be learned if the right people were so inclined to make a change.
Correlation causation axiom might apply here.

Down boy, apparently humor is not your strong suit, I did put a smiley face on it!. I agree there is no need to ruin anybody's future over first offenses or just petty crimes. Repeat habitual offenders that work the system because the punishment has no teeth is a whole different matter. As the juveniles crimes escalate, so should the punishment. Perhaps then we could stop them before the graduate to bigger crimes against society.

All that really needs to be said is that the owner of the SUV said the kids didn't deserve to die, record and all. And the person they actually hit said they didn't deserve to die. The two people with a dog in this fight have both said these children didn't deserve to die... Everybody else is simply a mouthpiece. And I'd take note on those who are celebrating the death of teenagers. They might just be sociopaths.
