Hey,

I'm probably going to be asked to move from Baltimore, MD to St. Petersburg for work. I would be working at a Hospital downtown. I've been looking up housing and any general info on the area but would like to hear from people actually living there on how it is and any suggestions, pros/cons etc.

I'll list a couple facts about me to help the responses"

30 year old Black Male
Single and no kids will be living with me
Budget for rent $1100-1200 max
I'm a city/urban guy so living close to downtown or anywhere with some action is key
Not too worried about safety coming from Baltimore lol , more so how law enforcement acts down there
Interested in restaurants/ bars/night life/sports
And how big of a shock am I looking at only living in "chocolate cities" my whole life (Baltimore, Atlanta, DC) ?

Is living in Tampa instead an option??

Any responses/advice are appreciated...Thanks!!

Sounds like a good fit for you. You could get a place Downtown or South Tampa and be right there for all the nightlife, events, etc. The urban areas of Tampa are all right there. Also, Tampa is 26 percent black. There's only a few places in the USA that I think you could be "shocked", I mean unless living anywhere where blacks are not the majority is a big deal for you.

Hopefully you can handle the heat.

Thanks for the reply, definitely not looking forward to the heat but thats the least of my worries....And yea just wanna make sure I'm not stepping into a backwoods type of situation lol

Its decent places to live in downtown St.Pete for under $1200? didnt see too many good ones when looking online

Also how is the north side of St. Pete? seems like I dont see too much about it but they got a cluster of condos and luxury apartments up there

Oops, when you said Downtown my mind went to Tampa. There's a few people on here that are knowledgeable on St. Pete, I'm sure they'll chime in. Not sure on prices but Downtown St. Pete is better than DT Tampa for living/things to do.

Tough to find a place near DT St pete in that price range. Maybe others can correct me but only when we looked 3 miles north or so of DT, did prices get a bit better. 33703 - north of crescent lake ---- really nice areas. Quiet , but close to all. Good luck.

ST Anthonys hospital or Bayfront medical center? Nice areas around Crescent Lake or the Old NorthEast area.

There should be plenty of good places in North St. Pete. As far as DTSP, there are alot of condos and apts downtown but they don't advertise on the main apt hunting websites as they are smaller buildings or attached to larger houses. Best thing to do as far as downtown goes is to drive around and look for signs. If you end up in North St. Pete, it still will only be a 5-10 mile drive to downtown.
