I am moving to tampa soon and i wanna know if tampa gets hit by lots hurricanes or which part of FL gets hit the least. Thanks

YOu would be fine inTampa, There are lots of nice areas, just stay clear of beach areas, you will be fine., ( Who can afford to live there anyway, with cost of insurance and taxes, There is nice areas, WestChase, Citrus Park, has lots of new development, New Tampa, IF you work live close to where you work. Dont live near city, or University it is high crime area,

The statistical odds of a Hurricane or any storm of 75mph or greather winds hitting a location in Hillsborough County, in which Tampa resides, are less than 1 percent - that's taken from the county emergency management website.

I believe the last 'direct' hit was in 1923..been here 19 years and seem some close calls..just alot of wind and rain, lost power in 2004 for 3 days, its not a matter of if, its a matter of when, but i wouldnt live my life worrying, as you would probably be struck by lightning before you we hit directly by a strong category hurricane. Just be prepared.

Like the others have said, Tampa gets hit the least, it was in October 1921 when the last direct hit on Tampa occured. But thats not to say Mother Nature care about statistics. The best advice is be prepared and dont worry about it. You will have at least 3-5 days notice, and usually most local weatherman give heads up about potential development up to a week or more in advance. Plus there are many weather websites that identify and speculate on tropical activity up to 10 days out or more, so as long as you dont live under a rock, you will know if one is coming....

I ditto what NatureCoastFL said. No, Tampa has not been hit a lot with hurricanes in the past but that's not to say we won't anytime soon. You can't predict what the weather is going to do. If your only concern is hurricanes, I would say not to worry about it and just know that if one is coming, you have days, even up to a week, to evacuate. Even so, you can not predict if it's going to hit. Hurricane Charley switched paths an hour before landfall so it's hard to say.

joshd....I've lived in Florida 17 years....in many places: Spring Hill, New Port Richey, Hudson, Tampa, Safety Harbor & now Brooksville, & have never sustained any damage from any hurricane. But you never know when or if one may hit near you in the future.
You know, Hurricanes are not like Tornadoes insofar as you get plenty of advanced notice on a Hurricane. The weather forcasters are pretty good in that regard. You usually have plenty of time to make preparations.
You cannot live in constant fear of one hitting you & be paranoid a whole lot. Charlie was one I thought would hit me almost directly in Safety Harbor, but at the last minute it veered away and hit the Ft. Myers & surrounding area.
You need to worry more about the taxes & homeowners insurance. Now THOSE can be SCARY.

I was there in 2004 and sweating bullets with Charlie. Although it hasn't been hit in forever, the bay area is a disaster waiting to happen. Above ground utilities, flood areas, etc will make it second only to New Orleans on a disaster scale if it took a direct hit.

Hurricanes are awesome. What happened to a good old fashon hurricane parties? I personally wish we had more. Not like tragic katrina hurricanes, but a good "power out for 12 hours", trees falling down hurricane!

Never. Last onshore bound storm to hit the Tampa area was 1921. But next summer could be the next or maybe another 50 years.
