I found out many national insurance companies don’t offer homeowners insurance in this area or in Florida. What makes them stay away? FL is not the only state with hurricanes the last time I checked.

Which companies are you using or have used, and are you happy with them?

Thanks for the input.

Guess they had to deal w/ FL gov't for increases - and didn't like that.

The company (State Farm) cited its “substantially weakened financial position,” which it tied to its inability to obtain regulatory approval of property insurance rate increases.

Here's a tool you can use to find list of companies and comparison rate.

Florida Office of Insurance Regulation / CHOICES: Homeowners Rate Comparison Tool

That said, my insurance company is not included in the list so it's not complete, but may help you find companies for quotes.

I use Gulf Coast Insurance. My contact there found me a more affordable policy than what I had and is always super responsive so now I refer him to all my friends and clients. I've never run into an issue getting insurance.

I use a broker to find my insurance and she actually checks every year to see if there is a cheaper alternative. I don't find the insurance any more or less expensive than other states that I've lived. I do, however, have flood insurance ($750 per year) which I did not have in other states. It is more for peace of mind than anything.

hard to believe unless California, NYC, DC or some densely populated area w/ a lot of uninsured motorists and high natural catastrophe risk......didn't think there was any state higher than FL for both home, car insurance...it's pretty whack here.

I agree. My car insurance and homeowners insurance are nearly triple what I paid before I moved down here.
