Flying into Tampa for a week in August. Looking for a rental car company that is close (Uber distance) but not considered airport location. Like anywhere, airport fees are ridiculous. I prefer a reliable big brand name instead of Fox or Sixt. Recommendations?

Best bet is Enterprise - there are 3-4 locations within cheap Uber distance from TPA. Kind of a waste though when you're gonna blow most of that tax difference on an uber, but it's your money.

Renting cars off airport in Tampa Bay is a recipe for disaster. The off-airport sites (whichever brand) are staffed by Spanish speaking idiots who don't care about customer service, and they have much fewer cars at those locations. The chance that you will arrive and find there is no car for you (despite you having a confirmed reservation) is VERY HIGH. It has happened to me COUNTLESS times with Hertz, Avis, Sixt, etc. I wouldn't do it.

^^^^^^
What they said.

A-1 is the absolute worst. I was commuting back and forth a few years ago, and used them a few times. It was a disaster every time, I had to wait forever, rarely got the car I wanted, the cars were dirty and poor maintained, etc., etc.

Checkout AutoSlash.com. I've managed to get some good deals on car rentals using them. Example, Tampa car rental for friend, they had booked for a week with National for $219, deal found for same car/company at $146 (Tampa airport rental).

Another, car rental at O'hare (Thrifty) last year for 8 days, originally booked at $409 (best rate offered through "conventional" searches which was crazy rate, I knew Autoslash would find better rate), Autoslash then found lower price $283 and then found lower price with Avis (same car level) for $162.

A couple years ago in Vegas they got me a deal with National, I could pick any car at time of rental (Emerald Club member) and picked up a Camaro for $122 for the week.

I've also saved $20-30/wk, which would more than pay for itself based on cost of going offsite and using Uber. Cost you nothing for the service, they make their commission on the back-end. Good luck.

We have had excellent luck with prices at TPA using our Costco card.

I just booked a car with Hertz at the airport through Priceline for one day for $22 after taxes. There's no way an uber round-trip is going to easily beat that.

I rented from Enterprise/Alamo last month at their Kennedy location (33606). My compact car with unlimited mileage for a week cost me $213. ALL of the employees were very nice and proficient in English. I had no problems whatsoever.
