Retirees to move to Florida in a smaller town but accessible to shops, medical and VA primary facility. Looking at two small areas Auburndale and Bartow. Any advice?
Thanks.

What’s your budget like? There are more desirable areas than those provided you have the budget for it.

I would recommend checking out either Alachua or Newberry, two small towns outside of Gainesville. The VA center in Gainesville is excellent and affiliated with the University of Florida School of Medicine. Each town has plenty of amenities nearby.

I would also recommend Winter Haven, much, much better than Bartow or Auburndale. Got quite a bit going on as far as shopping/dining/entertainment, yet still a nice small town. Very easy to get to Lakeland quickly from there.

I like Winter Haven as well but it's not what one would call "rural/country" as the OP desires. It's getting pretty built up and why Auburndale or Lake Alfred might be better options for that area.

I would much rather live in Glades county.

It seems pretty rural coming from Tampa.

Well the title said "rural", but the post said he wants smaller town but accessible to shops, medical and VA, so I don't think they really want all that rural. Winter Haven feels pretty "rural" to me, compared to Lakeland; and even Lakeland would seem "rural" compared to Tampa or Orlando. All about perspective.

Winter Haven to most in Florida probably reads "suburban" given it has too much uninterrupted development to be rural/country. Rural in my book would be low density with few traffic lights and one main thoroughfare. The population density of Winter Haven is almost 1100 people per square mile, twice the Florida average and is in the top 20% in the US for population growth.
