I'm looking to change careers and to move to Tampa in the next couple of months.

I have an MBA in finance from a tier-1 school and an undergraduate degree in computer science. I'm not sure where would be the best places (industries as a whole / specific employers) to start looking. I have heard that the health-care industry is big in Tampa. Would there be certain positions at a medical company or a hospital that are worth looking into, for someone with my background?

I’m very open to different possibilities. Thanks in advance.

Wow, wouldn't even know where to start......probably would depend on your work experience and background. Health care jobs for the non-clinician - human resources for hospital organizations or financial comptroller/resource management. Good luck. Could you hook up with a "head hunter" that might be able to find a good position for you that meets an organizations need as well as your own?

Given your background, I would recommend Raymond James Financial (HQ)or Franklin Templeton.

Thanks everyone for the input. I know it's risky to leave a secure/well-paying job in this economy, but I just really don't like the NoVA/DC area or the job. On the other hand, being that I love the Tampa Bay area, I'd be willing to take a pay cut and work for a smaller firm.

I have some good connections in Florida, and the "headhunter" idea also sounds like a good start. I know there must be quite a few finance-MBAs in the TB area, and right now I'm just starting to explore what kinds of things they are doing down there.

Nowadays with the situation we are going thru get a job first, before leaving your present one. Besides it is much easier to get a job while you are employed.

You can also try Chase Bank, they have a huge campus in East Tampa
CItigroup (Tampa) and HBOC (Brandon) also have offices here.

Are you looking to work in Finance or in the IT side?

Unfortunately both IT and Finance jobs are really tight in Tampa since a lot of firms have left. Additionally, since the University of South Florida in Tampa pumps out both Computer and Finance grads, the market its pretty saturated with available talent. The advanced degree is nice, but it is more the experience in the exact position that will get you the job. If you have 10 plus years experience and are current on the latest technology, and wont be offended at an mid-upper 5 figure salary, then you probably wont have a hard time finding something within 6 months.
Definitely check into the headhunter route. There are jobs out there but a lot are not posted due to the overwhelming flood of unqualified applicants sending resumes to everything. The Tampa economy is hurting and a lot of people are getting desperate.
