With teacher shortages all around the country, some school districts are turning to 4-day school week. For those of you who work in a school with a 4-day week, how does the week go? Is the 5th day truly off? Do you keep the same pay? How does student achievement compare?

From the teachers I know who have done this (for cost cutting reasons at their districts). Yes, the 5th day is a day off (The buildings are closed)... presuming you have prepared You can take the day off.

If you're behind (or a new teacher buried in prep), you will often use the 5th day to finish up, or prepare for next week. The 4 days are longer... so you have to fit that interrutpion into your weekly schedule (there is no reduction in contact hours, 5 days of work crammed into 4). Beats the many teachers I know who teach 2 complete shifts of classes to students (usually 10hrs- (2x5 hr shifts of students) / - 12 hrs (2x6 hr shifts of students) per day, 5 days / week + 1/2 day on Saturday (which is 8 yrs minimum for teacher). That was the joke of working in Asia. Saturday's are only working 1/2 day (12 hrs), instead of weekdays when you have to work a full day (24 hrs)
