In my mind I plainly see
rows of blooming apple trees,
miles of cultivated fields,
yards adorned by daffodils,
maple trees all neatly trimmed,
small child swinging from a limb,
little girls all dressed in lace
in this nearby faraway place.

In my mind I clearly hear
sounds of sorrow and of cheer,
children laughing, babies crying,
young men joking, old men dying,
planners planning, teachers teaching,
millers milling, preachers preaching.
All are gone without a trace
from this nearby faraway place.

Sawmills buzzing, whistles blowing,
people coming, people going,
cattle bawling, donkeys braying,
young men cursing, old men praying,
pitchers pitching, catchers catching,
turkeys gobbling, chickens hatching.
All are gone without a trace
from this nearby faraway place.

Beehives humming, church bells ringing,
grinders grinding, singers singing,
mothers worrying, young girls dreaming,
fathers scolding, young boys scheming,
buyers buying, sellers selling,
sneakers sneaking, tattlers telling.
All are gone without a trace
from this nearby faraway place.

Only gravestones tell their stories,
tales of tragedy and glory.
Along the river silence reigns
just as it did before they came,
and steep-faced mountains quietly stand
watch over this enchanted land.
Only death still shows its face
in this nearby faraway place.

Extremely well written. The descriptive phrases are wonderful. It actually brings up visions of places no longer the same and fond memories of times gone by. Good job.
