Next time they need a logo change, they should hit me up. I'll make something wicked on MS Paint.

I love the old logo, and I completely dislike the new one. Nothing unique or interesting about it. One of my friends compared the new logo to New Coke. Hopefully it fades away as quickly as New Coke did.

A lot of these boutique ad agencies are tied in with candidates when they run for office, smells like a little pay back is being had. I think this agency used to go by Gish Sherwood & Friends. Maybe it should be renamed again to GS& Children, we make crayons look good.

It's just blah. But for $46,000, what do you expect? It was probably thrown together during an episode of "Mad Men".

Ha! If it was April 1st I'd understand. The question remains, who was the graphics person or company that was proud enough to submit the design. The follow up question: "Who in TN government approved it?" Those are the people I'd like to meet.

For a cup of coffee, I could produce one that crappy.

Oh man, that is lame. Coming from an outsider, I've always thought TN had one of the best state logos. Loved the circle and stars.

The comments on the GS&F Facebook page are brutal. It's been a LONG time since Ive seen something get universal derision like this.

To be fair, this logo is only intended to replace the variety of logos for dozens of state agencies. It's going to be on letterhead and websites that most of us never see. It's not like they're getting rid of the state flag or anything.

Given that GS&F is a PR firm, they should be prepared to handle this fiasco. But all they have said is that they "stand by" their design.

I know nothing about this specific situation. BUT... I do have some idea as to how this could cost $46,000:

- Many hours brainstorming and creating various preliminary logos. This is what everyone here thinks they can do in 5 minutes with MS Paint, but it probably took days of man hours from multiple people to come up with dozens of possible ideas. Even then it would have only been a tiny fraction of the total cost.
- Many many more hours researching the ideas to make sure there weren't any trademark violations or PR problems. It wouldn't do, for example, to pick a beautiful logo just to find out after final approval that it was trademarked somewhere else, or that a similar logo had been used by some Nazi organization, or that if you squint it looks like a sex act.
- Preparing physical and electronic sample uses of all the proposed logos (letterheads, vehicle signs, web sites, etc.), then presenting the logos to whichever state agency hired them.
- Sending a short list of approved logo samples to every governmental agency in the state for approval.
- Getting comments back from every state agency and trying to incorporate them (or ignore them in a politically correct manner).

The PR firm probably had dozens of preliminary logo ideas that greatly surpassed the final choice in artistic quality, but ultimately they had no choice but to go with the one all the bureaucrats agreed on. So we got what we got.

^ This last post. $46,000 may seem excessive, and the logo might be ass ugly, but in a state government, picking a logo for multiple agencies is a herculean task.

Please i do design work and no design is ever worth 46k especially to come up with a simple logo made in ms paint like this one. if it takes them that many man hours to make this simple logo they need some help

I created tons of logos and it would ever amount to 46k, the most it would be $500

They could do thousands of revisions but it doesnt excuse the 5th grade work
