These just started popping up on my property since we did some clearing of land for our driveway. I had never seen them before we started the clearing. We must have stirred something up to bring them out. I've searched online but can't seem to find any info on them. Just wondering if anybody knows what they are and if they are good/bad to keep around. They look sharp and spikey but really they are not as bad as they look. They stand about 2 1/2' tall.

Those are thistles. And no, they are not considered a good plants. I suggest getting rid of all of them as soon as you can. I would use Roundup to kill them right down to the roots.

thank you. i was able to find some info online about it now that i know what it is. Have to say of all the weeds i've seen, it is one of the prettiest weeds. I'll have to tackle them on my next trip up there before they spread even more. I have just a few patches of them.

Yes, they are very pretty, just take care when touching or removing them.
They have quite a sting.

LOL. We discussed these at length on a thread some time ago. I was lamenting the "purple gumdrop weed" that was cropping up like mad in my backyard. It had come over to visit-- uninvited-- from a wooded area behind my house, and I wanted to send it packing.

Yes, the gardener ID'd it as thistle and it's not easy to get rid of. We're still spraying, and they're still coming back. You would not believe how fast they spread. You'll probably have a yard full of them when you get back, daniellefort.
