I currently live in Suffolk County NY, about 65 miles East of NYC. I receive a military pension along with Social Security. Additionally my wife also receives a retirement pension. We have not had to work since retirement (we live within our means). Both of us enjoy saltwater fishing, camping and many other outdoor activities. Winters in NY have become too long and overly expensive. It seems as though; we unpack our summer gear in April and the first week in September we pack everything back in for the cold upcoming winter. living in a warm/hot climate will not be a challenge to us at all. Visited Texas several times (DFW and San Antonio) areas and enjoyed the state. I like the fact Texas is more of a conservative state than NY, there is no state income tax, we would benefit from the use of Lackland AFB in San Antonio, the climate is appealing, cost of living is attractive although I find the property taxes higher in Texas compared to SC. SC has a state income tax along with personal property taxes, boats, cars, etc...Which ever state we choose, we will not purchase a home in a gated community (hoa) and/or live on top of our neighbors. Any constructive input will be well appreciated.
