Dan Patrick: Protect marriage, oppose abortion | www.mystatesman.com

This is so twisted. Whatever happened to the principles of Freedom and Liberty? Wasn't Texas founded by rugged individualists? What is all of this talk about "religious freedom" to justify discriminating against homosexuals? Texas just took a turn for the worse with this new administration. Don't they realize that this "religious freedom" stance cuts both ways?

quote of the day: "We declare this state to be the sovereign territory of Jesus Christ." Outrageous.

Moderator cut: orphaned

Aguadulce is right. The morons that voted these people in have set Texas back, not forward. And what i think is funny is conservatives talk about liberty but then they want to tell people how to live their lives. I also dont throw my religion down peoples throats. People should just be allowed to live their life how they want without people telling them how to do it.

Love that idiot Patrick's quote too about Texas being the leader in education. Maybe in buying textbooks, but the leader in education and education scores is Massachusetts.

Even if they hate gays, do they realize that they look like a bunch of immature high school kids doing that stunt?

I love how people like this guy always want to turn it into some sort of attack:

' “My family’s been in Texas since 1852,” Bell said after the forum. “What has always been normal for us, we’re suddenly being told it’s not normal, that those things that are our traditional values, somehow they are wrong.” '

I know plenty of gay people. Not a one think there is anything wrong with the traditional mom/dad/kids idea. They just want the same rights afforded to them as other people are granted, and for acknowledgment that just because one way works, it doesn't mean other ways aren't just as good.

"Bell said his bill is an effort to stymie federal judges and others who seek to impose their will on Texans.

“It is a liberal agenda being advanced by a small body of people who are out of step with Texans, out of step with Americans and very much endangering state’s rights,” he said."

First off, good luck with that. It's all but certain Texas' ban will be struck down this summer, and what is he going to do, chain himself to the doors of a church to prevent the gays from being able to get and get married? It's like desegregation of schools all over again - the federal government will have to drag these backwards redneck racists into the modern age.

Secondly, it seems like he is the one who is out of step - pretty much every poll or study done shows that most Americans increasingly support equal rights for everyone, and certainly at least a majority do these days.

Also outrageous is the amount of money they're spending to fight this issue. The opposite of fiscally conservative.

When you consider the cast of characters that the Texas GOP has put out recently is this really a surprise? People love to bag on the liberals from California, but Louie Gohmert, Rick Perry, Ted Cruz, and Dan Patrick are just as effed up as Feinstein, Boxer, Pelosi, etc.
