Hello, I am looking for some advice/opinions. I currently live in Waterloo, on and my husband has accepted a position at Pearson Airport. The commute is proving to be too much so we are looking to relocate. Is the Ajax/pickering area a reasonable commute? Map quest suggests 35 mins but I struggle to believe that. We have a 407 Transponder, paid for by his employer so 407 is an option. Also, home would need to be under 375,000 and min of 3 bedrooms so needing a community with better commute than Waterloo and within that price point.

Thank you for the advice.

If you're moving anyway, why would you want to subject your husband to driving from ajax/pickering to the airport? why not move to west end?

Note: I have no idea what 407 is like, but 401 is a #$#@$ing nightmare anytime of day from there to there.

It is crazy that you are asking about Ajax/Pickering, the eastern edge of GTA when your husband works at YYZ, west of Toronto.

Why not Brampton, Mississauga or Etobicoke?

Commute from Pickering/Ajax everyday will be utterly insane.

Reason to not picking Brampton is my Hubby has said he will not move there. Mississauga and Milton appear to be out of our price point housing wise (we are a family with 4 children, so need a min 3 bedroom house with large enough space to have the kids share rooms)

If Ajax area is a nightmare of a commute, would Erin/Orangeville be any better? His commute is an hour or slightly more at the moment so looking to down size that.

If you're commuting on the 401 than yes that's terrible, but I think the 407 should be ok? I don't personally use it much but that's kind of the whole point of the tolls, to find a balance, you want to get a lot of users to maximize revenue, but still have something competitive vs the alternatives (which are free) which means you want free flowing traffic.

Ajax/Pickering and Orangeville are probably similar commuters (assuming you use 407 and not 401). I think Orangeville is maybe a bit less expensive, if you don't mind living in a "small" town.

Only a masochist would move to the Durham Region knowing they have to commute Pearson.

So wait, your employer is paying for the transponder but not the tolls, right?

Tolls are pretty steep, especially for that kind of distance

2x47km/day, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year x $0.30/km = $7000 per year in tolls, so I'm not sure you're saving that much by living there instead of Mississauga or Milton.

Orangeville/Erin are not exactly close, but still a lot better than commuting across all of Toronto on the 401.

The employer is paying for transponder and tolls, so no cost to hubby to use the 407. We are happy with small towns, just looking to find the right balance. Ajax area we like, but after hearing a lot of opinions we are opting not to go that route, so search will continue to areas west of Toronto. Thanks for the advice, we appreciate the input.
