I am renting a condo and have 1 1/2 years left on the lease. The condo is always hot, stuffy, dry and noisy. I am not sleeping at night and consequently getting ill. I have major health problems that are getting worse by living in this condo. I need out but don't know how to break my lease. My landlord is not a very nice person and I am afraid of what she might do. I can get doctor's letters supporting my need to move if that would help. Any suggestions please?
why did you sign a 2 year lease? 1 year is the norm. I always try to negotiate to the shortest timeframe and avoid the professionally managed places that give you a teaser deal to get you sign a long-term rental contract.
As for getting out of your lease, see what the mandated renter protections are. That may be a way to get out, but it could require you hiring a lawyer and going to court.
You could also stop paying your rent and get evicted; not advisable as this will hurt your ability to rent in the future.
We were put in a stressful position when we signed. We were away for the winter and put our house up for sale as the market as hot. While we were away over a 2 week period our house sold and 5 days later my husband had a heart attack. So here we were out of town, house was sold, husband in hospital and our "lovely"agent that sold our home found us this rental. We only saw pictures but trusted him, like idiots, and agreed to sign the 2 year lease like he said we had too. We never knew he was getting a months rent in his pocket. So here I am miserable, getting sick and very depressed.
You could ask your land lord whats it going to cost to break the lease, usually 3 months rent will do it. if not you could bluff her and say 3 months is better than nothing if i just walk away eh...
If your landlord wants to be a real jerk she can hold you to the original contract unless there is something in the Ontario renters code that covers breaking of contract due to medical issues.
