I'm moving to Toronto temporarily this January from the US. I am going to be there for 5 months and was told I only need my passport for that time. Has anyone had experience with this? Have any issues passing through the border when staying for that long?
yes, you only need a passport to get into canada. i would bring another piece (just to be safe, because sometimes they'll ask)... but really, that's all you need. they may ask for another piece if they're trying to be difficult but i've only had that problem going into the states from canada. canadian border patrol is soooo much nicer than usa.. lol.
i think you can come for less than 6 months, otherwise you would need a working permit/visa. just say you are travelling and visiting family/friends.
It depends what you mean by "moving" (as opposed to "visiting") and what country your passport is from. If you intend to work you need the proper visa.
