I know there's kosher-style places, but that's not what I was wondering. I mean certified-kosher delis. What's it like trying to keep kosher in Toronto?
I believe the only kosher restaurant downtown is Oasis, in the First Canadian Place tower. The Orthodox Jewish area is centered about Bathurst and Lawrence/Bathurst and there are lots of kosher places there, as well as in the suburb of Thornhill.
I hear that one organization has a monopoly on kosher certification in Toronto and because of that it's very expensive. This may or may not be true. Not sure if you are an Orthodox Jew, but if you aren't, you should know that making a restaurant kosher is mostly to do with WHO is preparing the food (A Jew must be involved) and WHERE the pots and utensils have been, rather than having much to do with the ingredients themselves. Therefore there's no reason a certified-kosher meal would taste more authentic or better and may in fact taste worse than a kosher-style place. (I'm assuming that kosher-style places aren't flavoring their pastrami sandwiches with pork or cheese)
