We are moving from Massachusetts to toronto with our 4 yr old. A lot of questions! Thank you for taking a look and answering if you can.
1. We are considering Leslieville and beaches areas for renting a place as I want to be close to my kid’s school in case of emergencies. I have a job offer from a company in downtown Toronto. Are there any other areas within 15-20 mins by cab from younge-dundas square that we should be looking at?
2. Any recommendations on schools? Will schools accept a student from mid year?
3. Can we get help with moving furniture into the apartment if we use upack.com for shipping our stuff from US?
4. Any other shipping company that is good for the move?
5. Can we export our car that is on loan? Can we pay EMI from Canada?
6. Any other tips?
We moved from Westchester, NY, last year, so I can give you a bit of info -
Don't know about your budget or what you're looking for housing-wise, but just be aware that traffic in Toronto is a nightmare, so don't expect to get anywhere fast. It could take you 20 minutes to go a couple of blocks in the downtown area. Keep that in mind.
Public schools have to take any kid who lives in their zone, so that's not something to worry about if you move mid-year.
Pretty sure you can't export your car unless you own it outright. You would have to pay off all loans before exporting it, as you have to present the title.
I should also add about the car - we did the export/import thing with one of our cars, and I would NEVER do it again. What a hassle! AND it cost several thousand dollars to boot. Cars are more expensive here, but it's already a PITA to switch everything over, don't add this stress to your life!
Thank you all for the input. From what you say we might just sell our car as it is on loan. I feel like moving itself is expensive as we own a home and need to find someone to rent it.
Any input on converting primary residence to rental? Did you have to go through that? We have mortgage, would bank be okay if we show Canadian income?
I don't think the loan is an issue but might be wrong. It can be a bit pricey in terms of taxes when importing, but bear in mind you'll pay a premium for a comparable one in Canada. I've imported 2 cars to from the US to Canada and it's doable with the documentation from this site.
As others have said, commuting times in Toronto are lengthy even when you're in Lesliville or Beaches. Rent close to transit options. Streetcars are busy and packed in the winter so subway is favorable.
