Or, you could do I-78 east to I-81 south to I-40 west, then pick up I-75 south to Chattanooga, then I-24 west over Seminary Ridge, a famous Civil War battleground. Just west of town, take I-59 south to Birmingham. There, you can go straight through town or use the I-459 bypass to I-20 west and right on into Dallas.
I used to have a pretty regular haul between Dallas and Carlstadt, NJ and that was always my preferred route because it's not as hilly and I hate going across Arkansas anyhow.
There are a lot of alternate routes depending on what your preferences are.
I do not like the I-75, I-59 and I-20 route through TN, AL, MS, LA, and TX. There are a lot of crazy drivers on I-75 S in TN and also a lot of fatal wrecks. AL and MS roads are not always in the best condition and the drive is boring.
