Or do you choose other places, e.g. eating at fast food joints, from street vendors, the grocery store, etc.?

Usually, restaurant for lunch (any type, not necessarily fancy. It can be a diner, for instance) and store bought food in the evening (provided we have a micro wave in the room to reheat a small entree). We occasionally get a room with a kitchenette and will cook pasta, stuff like that, in the evening, sometimes for lunch too if we're not venturing too far from the hotel that day.
Traveling alone or with a family sure makes a big difference IMHO.

Dining out is a big thing to me, and I usually dine out on ROAD trips for both lunch/brunch and dinner. My last international trip was to Mexico, and I occasionally dined out but usually got street food (and got sick as a result). Before that it was Spain / Morocco, and I remember a typical day as getting breakfast from a bakery / sweet shop, having a fixed-price lunch at a restaurant, and eating dinner at a bar or "snack"...and I managed to lose about 30 pounds on that vacation

We're on vacation now. For the past 5 days we had no fridge or micro in the room so breakfast, lunch and dinner out, a couple days we packed a picnic lunch. Now we're in a condo and I just ran to the store for some good fish and a big salad to whip up tonight, it' will be nice to eat in. We're pretty food focused and love to try new things, but tend to go for the local spots rather than the tourist traps.

I would say it depends on what country I am in, how long I am staying and what kitchen facilities are available where I am staying. So it is mixed as some meals (lunch and dinner) I will eat out in local restaurants and some not.

I agree; it all depends upon where I am and what I am doing. One "trick," I use when I'm broke and traveling is at the hotel breakfast buffet. First, I pig out so as not to be too hungry. Next I "pocket" some meat, cheese, and bread. Snatch an apple or banana and bingo, lunch on the cheap. Just buy a diet coke at a local store.

Usually dinner is at a "local" place. I don't do the big fancy restaurant. Just a local pub or whatever their equivalent is.

We eat wherever it's convenient. A lot depends on where we are at the moment. If we're driving and heading to a destination we usually stop at a fast food place. Once we arrive at out destination(s) then we look for local cuisine. Especially like the local mom & pop cafes if they are available.

I don't like to 'burn-daylight', so... eat before dawn and after dark, or street food during the day. I usually eat on $3USD/day, so only eat out in countries where that is possible. I eat on less than $3USD while at home in USA, and have been doing so as a family for 30 yrs. If I want to eat out at a fancy joint, I do so, money is not the issue. I prefer to eat / live / stay as a local. My Lodging is $10 / night worldwide (stay with locals), except when I can't find a place in my many 'guesthome' directories.

I do the 5 star stuff Internationally (paid by employer)~ 200 nights / yr in various countries), so I have plenty of free nights if I need to use one.

I like to eat at all different places, sometimes cheap sometimes expensive. People sometimes say the higher priced isn't the "real view" of a city.. but that's not true.
