I was initially thinking of going to Fiji or Greece but have since thought of going to Finland/Russia instead since the fares to Greece have gone up too much. I have 11-12 days to do this trip.
Plan is to fly LAX to Helsinki, spend time around Helsinki, day trip to Tallin, Estonia and then catch the allegro train to St. Petersburg. Spend some time around St. Petersburg and then catch the overnight sleeper train to Moscow.
Questions:
- any not to miss places between St. Petersburg and Moscow?
- I am East Indian in ethnicity, my complexion is much more light skinned but definitely brown not white. I am concerned about racism in St. Petersburg & Moscow against people of color. How bad is this? Is this something a person of color even needs to worry about?
@azoria, I know it's alive and well but i'm just trying to find out how bad it is and what kind of risk I will be taking. If all I get is rude remarks that is one thing... if I am attacked that's obviously on a whole different level!
I've interacted with many Russians before mostly in the work environment and when I was a student in the international house, all the Russians that I have met in the past have been really friendly towards me. It really came as a surprise to me that there would be so much racial hate in Russia.
I'm near positive that after getting a visa and the higher prices in Finland and Russia, you're going to be pulled back way further than what the difference may be just going to Greece. I still think a trip to Russia is more interesting. I wouldn't think that any racism should become physically violent at the very least, but I also don't know for sure. Probably it would be totally fine?
Do not be so afraid of Russian. In Russia live more than a hundred nationalities, including Indians. Racism in times less than in America. Otherwise Russian would kill each other. Greater chance that the conflict will arise within ethnic groups than for its side-chapel
In regards to racism, Russia is just fine, especially St. Pete. You will find there are numerous tourists and workers of Asian and Indian ethnicity there, and only blacks are absent though you will see them as a worker cleaning the streets, or trying to sell some tourist stuff/sight seeing trip.
Sure, you can encounter issues, but you can encounter issues in many countries including the US. The chances of encountering an issue are low. Can it happen? Sure, of course, but the chances of it happening is greatly overstated.
Indians are not rare in Russia or anything, and the partnership started back during Soviet times. Bollywood films and stars are known in Russia, and India is a popular destination for Russians.

At least his current plans are a lot more interesting than just sitting around in Greece.
HEL to the Centre: bus €4.50
Helsinki to Tallinn and back: ~€50
Helsinki to St. Pete: €75 OR €37 if he takes the 6am train

Not likely to get him bankrupt.
Sure, but OP also said he opted for this to save money. If the airfare is the only aspect of it that is cheaper, in the end it's probably not even going to balance out, is all i'm saying.
