To get in in less then a week (walk in you pay Big $$'s to get it)
Normal turn around is 4-6 weeks for mail in passport, with Express Mail on both ends.
Mail in Expedite is around 2 weeks, but costs more.
BTW: When you apply click the box for extra pages, does not cost more when you apply but if you need to go back later cost you almost as much as a new passport to get pages added.

When I renewed a couple of years ago, all I needed to do was make an appointment through their phone system, and go at the appointed time with my paperwork. Since they are produced "in house", the waiting time is only determined by the backlog they may have.
It actually may have been three days, now that I think about it. They contacted me that it was ready, and I went back in to pick it up.

Actually, it didn't cost me any more to go into the passport office. I didn't have "expedited processing"- the time frame just was what it was.
Of course, things might have changed since I did this, in April 2013. I know, at that point, there was the option of "expedited processing", where you would have to show proof of travel within two weeks, but no, I didn't go that route.
ETA: Now I see that things have changed. Well, that sucks. (Ignore the woman behind the green curtain. )
My first passport took 3 days. If was one of those "rush" passports you pay extra for, if you have already purchased a plane ticket for travel that's less than X number of days away. That was in 1984 at the Rockefeller Center office that was closed soon after, because of the Soviet Spy scandal!
