Im going to visit my parents this summer. We are driving down I81 and I77 from NJ to FL. Kids are 11 and 13. Looking for activity ideas along the way. My parents are very old and we are visiting them. A week with my kids would stress my parents beyond.
Tentative idea is of course Blue Ridge Parkway but Im open to other ideas South of the PA border. The stops should not be too far from either 81/77 or the Blue Ridge Parkway. The I95 north of SC route is a definite no. I will never willingly try to get through DC again.
Stop at the Apple House in Linden, VA and get some warm apple donuts. You're welcome.
Carowinds Amusement Park is right off of 77 at the NC/SC border, if you're looking to burn a full day halfway through the trip. Your kids would probably love that.
A lot of people like the Charles Town and Harpers Ferry, WV area for touristy things, it's not far off of I81. I would look into it on Tripadvisor to see if anything catches your eye. In Virginia a lot of people like Luray Caverns which is right off of I81 as well.
You could try the Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley, WV for something out of the ordinary. Best bet is to take I-81 south to I-64 west to Beckley, then from there take I-77 south.
Chimney Corner, Hawks Nest SP and the New River Gorge Bridge are in close proximity (30 to 35 miles) to I77 and are a worthwhile side trip.
