(Originally posted this in the Seattle area forum, but then realized there was a travel forum where I might also get some good responses. Apologies for the double post!)
Hi all -- I'll be relocating to Seattle in a couple of weeks and am going to make the drive from central Illinois. I was wondering if anyone had advice on the safest/best route to take if they had driven from a similar area.
I've heard that moving to I-90 after I-80 in Iowa (South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington) will make for a more scenic/interesting drive, but I'm also concerned about the mountains once I hit western Montana and Idaho and the accompanying road conditions. Is it late enough in the year that this will be no big deal, or am I setting myself up for delays and dangerous driving?
I could also stay further south and stick with I-80 through Salt Lake and approach Seattle from the southeast, which seems to avoid major swaths of mountains. Not sure how the scenery is on this drive, though getting to my new job in one piece is obviously more important than photo ops.
Does anyone else have firsthand experience making this drive?
