Even though there has always been horrific crimes that words can't even describe it, most of the psychopaths esp those that get thrilled in inflicting pain over the victims tend to be males; BTK, Ted Bundy, Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, etc.
Now there are certain women who have killed too but usually I don't hear about them torturing more than 3 people for a prolonged period of time, before killing; I'm not talking about simply giving someone poison or shooting them but seriously torturing them as they're struggling and pleading for his/her life. The only evil lady I can think about is Countess Elizabeth Bathory aka Female Dracula from the 1500's I think. Trully evil, sadistic lady but can't think of any other woman that would do that sort of thing, not in the level those male psychopaths do.
For some reason, I would be in shocked in hearing that there can still the female counterpart of BTK or the other male sickos. Usually, a woman is known for having slightly more empathy than the male.
A few points here, understand you can be a mass murderer and NOT be a psychopath. In fact, the vast majority of psychopath's ARE NOT murderer's. Most CEO's and person's in such positions of power (think presidents) are psychopaths. So are your next door neighbors, doctor, dentist, your bus driver, and the kid that pours your latte in the morning.

Though the ones I mentioned were both serial killers and psychopaths.
I'll assume you've never wandered over into the "Relationships" forum. Women are the spawn of Satan according to quite a few male posters over there .
But, I digress. To answer your question, yes, most torturers are usually men. Don't have an explanation for you, though.
