So I am doing a study on kids' programs (particularly Disney programs, because they basically have the monopoly on them).
What really struck me was how successful programs like High School musical, Hanna Montana and others are. So my question is, why do you think this is?
Do these programs (and the personalities that emerge, like Jonas Brothers) reflect American Society, and if yes, how?
What kind of values and ideas do they transmit to the young viewers?
I would be really interested to know your opinions on this.
I think the appeal to the big buying audience of tweens is that the material sounds cool enough for them to feel it is mature, but is safe enough to keep parents from censoring it.
I watched a biography special for two big tween stars over the weekend and was amazed at their incredible popularity. Both are talented (speaking of Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber), but have amassed followings and financial status that is mind boggling.
I think the TV shows that star these kids are just silly....but apparently they aren't to the audience who watched them. The only problem I would find is the clothes and other stuff these kids have on their television shows really push young tweens into a materialistic frame of mind and many parents on the financial brink. Luckily, many of these name brand fashions are at least sold in lower priced retail stores like WalMart.
High School Musical is pretty much Grease without the adult content, and preteen girls have been memorizing the Grease soundtrack for as long as movie and film have been in circulation.
Because they're the modern equivalent of Grease and The Monkees?
