I love Damon! He may not always make the best decisions (making Elena drink blood) but you know his heart is in the right place. I can't imagine that Stefon and Elena are going to forgive him any time soon.
Now, does the blood stay in her system forever or will it eventually leave her body? I'm curious to know if she isn't killed immediately will that affect her turning or not?

It won't stay in her system forever. That is why Damon was trying to put off the 'thing' until the next month.
