So, I don't get HBO. And I am not sorry I will miss this cause I just could not stomach seeing Matt Damon kissing Liberace (Mike Douglas) in the bathtub. Its on HBO Sunday night. Hope everyone who wants to see it gets the chance.
I'm looking forward to it! I'm not that taken by Liberace or the story per se but I like the actors and enjoy it when they take parts that are far out of their box. Since this is a Soderberg project I'm assuming that they are more on board because they have worked with him in he past and they like working together.
I wonder if this movie will finally crack the mystery of why Liberace was so popular? Apparently Soderbergs parents liked him according to an interview though like and being big fans I think is different.
We had front row seats for Liberace years ago. He was extremely entertaining. I don't remember anyone ever discussing his personal life. The article contains mixed reviews about his piano playing skills. Listen to him play in the videos. I'll be watching Sunday.
Clip:
In Behind the Candelabra, the first time we encounter Michael Douglas’ Liberace is, naturally, on stage, treating his Vegas audience to a little bit of the boogie-woogie. He deftly carries the jaunty rhythmic bass line in his left hand while adding the melodic riff in his right between bouts of patter with the audience. And if you didn’t think talking and playing (and grinning) at the same time was impressive enough, how about that little “experiment,” as Liberace puts it, where he effortlessly plays the tune double-time—you know, 16 beats to the bar instead of 8? We don't subscribe to HBO but I'd like to see the movie. Hopefully my sister will record it. My mother lived next door to Liberace when she was a teenager and talks lovingly about Walter and his brother George. She is 91 now and has dementia. She may not remember what she had for lunch, but she will never forget Liberace!
I'm going to set my DVR right now because by Sunday I will probably forget about it. Thanks for the reminder, Barb, even though it wasn't meant to be positive.
This was actually an entry at the Cannes film festival. Reviews are excellent. I read that if it had had a theatrical release, it would have been Academy Award.material.
