Great end to a fantastic series.

For a show where each episode began with a death, and centered around a family owned funeral/undertaker business the ending just seemed right.

My sister and I still talk about how great that finale was--one of the best of any series I've watched.

And I'm pretty sure it is the series that is talked about most with regard to excellent finales (with Newhart a close second I'm sure).

First time around thought the death dates seemed so far away (the mother IIRC dies in 2029, and Claire her daughter and "youngest" main cast member passes in 2049), but thinking about it now those numbers aren't so far off.

A late boomer born in early 1960's if reaches their late 80's will see 2049. Now that is something to wrap one's head around.

David Fisher seeing his young husband (as he would the first time they met) before passing was another touching moment. Fact the man actually died much older (shot during armed robbery), made it even more so.

I never rewatch a series, but I am making an exception for Six Feet Under. I'm halfway through. I agree that the finale was spot-on. (Made up for the awful finale of St. Elsewhere.) I actually cried because these were characters I cared about and the deaths seemed real. Acting was spectacular.

Walter White slowly expiring to Badfinger's Baby Blue comes close, but the final nine minutes of Six Feet Under is the gold standard for ushering out a television series.

Actually, Claire dies at the age of 102 in 2085.

SFU could have easily been another series about behind scenes drama of a family run business; all dark secrets, anger, people living in the past and holding grudges, but ended up being so much more.

Imaging growing up and or married into a family where you literally face death every day. Dad/husband has dead bodies down in the basement, and you can't help but wander in at times and see a corpse opened up/being prepared for burial.

This plays out in the lives of not just Mrs. Fisher, but her children as well. Six Feet Under isn't just about a body being planted, but the emotions and other things the characters try to keep "buried" deep in they minds, but keeps coming out in various ways (Nate and is serial womanizing for instance).

SFU ending was brilliant in so many ways but one is we all would like to know how we're going to die. What will it be like, how will it occur? Those sort of things; and of course none of us will ever know the answer.
