It is odd how Sunday night has become the go-to night, especially for cable. Both HBO and SHO put their big shows on Sunday, dramas and comedies. Plus the better cable shows from AMC, TNT and more. And even the broadcast networks are hooked on Sunday, with all four putting some of their big dogs on that night.

I used to have that problem when Downton Abbey aired against Mad Men. Also when 60 Minutes aired against Futurama/King of the Hill and oddly enough Lois and Clark vs Married with Children lol
Usually, TNT, TBS, FX, etc will run the show again later at night. I think TNT has The Last Ship at 9pm, then Falling Skies at 10pm, followed by a repeat of both shows, at 11pm and midnight, respectively.
I think people watch less tv than they used to generally, but the weekends still have large audiences. So maybe the networks figure if their show is going to get watched it needs to be on the weekend/Sunday?
This summer there's absolutely nothing on Sunday nights for me. I don't get cable, but the network shows are junk, mostly game shows and reality shows. I'll be watching a DVD of Orange is the New Black Season 2 all night tonight.
Just get a DVR. They're not very expensive and they're worth it just so you don't have to watch a million commercials. I don't watch anything live anymore.
