Kyle Chandler-Homefront-Early Edition-Friday Night Lights-Bunch of supporting roles on oscar nominated movies
He was the lead in all three of those shows. Tour of Duty would fit the bill for this thread as he was a recurring character that appeared in only 8 of the 58 episodes.

Kyle Chandler was only a supporting character in Homefront. He played the minor league baseball player. He was very young at the time. From there, he did get the lead in Friday Night Lights.

He appeared in all 42 episodes and is the first one listed under main characters on the Homefront Wikipedia page. He was also in the opening credits.
Yes, I think appearing in the opening credits is a sure-fire sign that you're not recurring, but considered a principal cast member. But keep in mind actors might start out as recurring or even a "featured player", then have their role beefed up and eventually be included in the main/principal cast. So perhaps starting in the opening credits would be the more precise term.
Did you ever watch Homefront? Ok, it was an ensemble show and he was in all of the shows. The credits are in alphabetical order, like they did with Downton Abbey, not in order of top to lowest billing. But the focus of the series was on the Sloans. They were the "leads" with a lot more airtime in the way that Hugh Bonneville was the lead and Sophie McShera had a supporting role. He did get the same credit as Mimi Kennedy and Ken Jenkins, but they had much more airtime and more involvement in the plots. When he was in Early Edition, then he was the leading character. IMO, Sophie McShera had a "minor role" in Downton Abbey, but was a recurring character and thanks to DA, she has gotten some larger parts in movies and other British programs (as well as the cancelled Galavant).
Billy Crystal-Soap

None of these are recurring roles.

Being in all episodes is definitely not reoccurring.
I think I found one. I only watched a few episodes of Kate & Allie and only remember the leads, but the Wiki says Wendie Malick had a recurring role.
She had a starring role in a short lived series "Trauma Center" 1983 before K&A.
