Saw a bit of it again last night, and still cannot understand for life of me how that series came to be and lasted long as it did. Each episode plods along and is about interesting as watching paint dry.
Grace seems just to be reading/doing some sort of stand-up act, as her acting seems wooden.
It depends on which season the episode was from. Starting in season 3 the show was a total trainwreck but the ratings were still there so it kept getting renewed. Season 4 and 5 the wheels really came off and it was ultimately canceled.
I think the show was supposed to be some sort of copycat of Roseanne. Stand-up comedienne having her own sitcom about a working class blue collar struggling single mother trying to make ends meet. Grace was a divorced single-mom as opposed to Roseanne having a blue-collar working class family. I remember watching it because there was nothing else on at that time slot, but I never really liked it.

I could barely stand 5 SECONDS of that show. That woman would moan and groan instead of speaking.
I enjoyed the show. It was paired with Roseanne, which certainly helped it. But.. Brett Butler is something of an acquired taste. Either love or hate her. She was very funny on My Name is Earl as Joy's mom (Don't you judge me!)
The downfall of the show was her addiction issues. Supposedly even to the point that she was showing her boobs to the 12 year old actor who played her son causing his parents to remove him from the show. Coincidentally, that actor, Jon Paul Steuer who also played Worf's son on Star Trek:TNG for an episode, died of suicide last January 1st.
