I am a 22 year old female born and raised in the CNMI (Tinian and Saipan). I went to school in Washington, D.C. in 2011, and I don't think I was more aware of my own race (Chamorro/Filipino) until I got there. It seems to be very important to people of color in the mainland, at least more important than it is here. Perhaps it's because I enjoy the privilege of being a native, but I digress.
What do people from the CNMI, Guam, Am. Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the USVI think of race relations in the U.S., particularly Black Lives Matter? I'd even go as far as extending this question to Alaska and Hawaii, both of which are home to a large Native population. I apologize if this comes off as insensitive to those of African descent in the territories, but I am genuinely curious about the opinions of the "< 1% Other" population.
Personally I find it disturbing that the issues that face U.S. territories and Native populations are absent from these discussions on race. I can't let it bother me, though. I was born with a beautiful culture and I can only be proud of it. I think many in all U.S. possessions can say the same.
